Rhinos Hold Off Winless Lynx in a Close One

Howes’ Debut Is Fruitful As He Notches Game Winner Late

ROCHESTER, NY, June 10, 2005 – The Rhinos are suddenly putting the pieces together and have strung a nice unbeaten streak into the mix. New Rhinos acquisition and USL Division 1 staple Greg Howes made his mark at Frontier Field Friday night by providing the only goal of a close match with the winless Toronto Lynx.

Playing Down to Their Level

After strong showings versus Montreal (0-0) and Toronto (5-3) in Canada and a thrashing versus previously unbeaten Portland in Rochester (3-1) last Friday, the Rhinos looked somewhat uninspired and flat for long periods. Similarly, the Lynx mustered few real chances in a first half that displayed two sides disinterested in taking any advantage.

Halftime Adjustments

Rochester played more inspired in the second half, as evidenced in Rhinos’ midfielder John Ball’s play. Ball took matters onto his own feet and began making impressive runs, but the goal scoring opportunities still remained few and far apart. On the other end, Rhinos ‘keeper Scott Vallow turned brief moments of brilliance by the Lynx to prevent Toronto from getting their first win this year.

Howes That Feel?

Newcomer Greg Howes came on in the 66’, and with three minutes and two touches, had the 8,842 fans at Frontier on their feet. An unfortunate bobble of the ball by Toronto ‘keeper Richard Goddard allowed Howes enough space to knock the ball in for 1-0 to the home side.

Back to .500

Rochester’s play in the last few matches has allowed them to even things at 4 wins, 1 draw, and 4 losses. Where the team heads from here is still to be seen. A bit more consistency with their approach to each match may make this side a formidable one come playoffs time in September.
