Day 2 at Richmond, Virginia
Richmond 1, Virginia Beach 0 (OT)
It can be stated with certainty that the Richmond Kickers were victorious over the Virginia Beach Mariners by a 1-0 score in a match played in front of 1,782 fans at the University of Richmond Stadium on Saturday night. What is still unclear is whether it was Rob Ukrop or Greg Simmonds who actually put the ball into the net; but in the end it doesn't really matter as the Kickers completed a weekend sweep of their James River rivals.
Early in Saturday's match, both teams were doing a good job keeping their opponents from moving forward. Richmond's Kevin Jeffrey got in behind the Mariners defense in the 13th minute, but his left-footed shot was right at Virginia Beach goalkeeper Matt Nelson and was easily saved. Four minutes later, the Mariners had their first good chance when Dante Washington had a look at goal from just outside the box, but his shot was easily saved by Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale.
In the 18th minute, a loose ball in the Kickers box was shot towards goal but hit off the crossbar and bounded back out (see picture 6 below). In the 23rd minute, the Kickers had a chance to take advantage of a loose ball of their own when Nelson failed on an attempt to punch out a Kickers cross, but the Kickers were unable to put the ball on net.
In the 25th minute, the Kickers had a really good opportunity when Mike Burke hit a hard shot from 25 yards out that required a sprawling save by Nelson. Two minutes later, Richmond had another good chance when a David Testo cross nearly found Jeffrey's foot as he charged into the box. One minute later, it was the Mariners who had another good opportunity when David Stokes rose well for a header, but put it just wide right.
In the 33rd minute, Jeffrey made a run into the Mariners box and his attempt to chip Nelson instead went harmlessly across the goal mouth. Two minutes later, it was the Mariners again attacking, when Washington's header off a corner kick was wide left. But Richmond had the last good chance of the half two minutes before the halftime whistle, when Burke once again put a powerful shot towards net off a cross from Jeffrey, but this time Burke's shot was over the bar, and the half ended with neither team having found the net.
Ten minutes into the second half, the home side had another good chance when Jeffrey made a run into the Mariners box and a quick shot from 10 yards out at an angle to the keeper's left forced a reaction save to knock the ball wide. Three minutes later, the Mariners had three good chances in quick succession from inside the Kickers box, but Pascale managed two good saves, and the third shot was barely wide left.

In the 60th minute, Washington had another good look at goal for the Mariners, but his shot from 15 yards out was just wide left. In the 70th minute, a through ball nearly had Jeffrey in alone on the Mariners keeper, but the ball was just a bit too far out in front for the Kickers striker, and Nelson was able to charge out to clear the ball just in time. In the 75th minute, Mariners midfielder Pato Aguilera hit a hard shot from near the top of the box that looked to be headed just under the crossbar, but Pascale was able to jump up and safely stop the shot. In the 76th minute, Virginia Beach had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Washington dropped a pass to Gary Brooks, but his bouncing shot was wide left. Five minutes before stoppage time, a header from the left side found the head of Richmond's Greg Simmonds as Nelson charged out to deflect the cross, but Simmond's header was just over the bar. Neither team threatened seriously again before the end of 90 minutes so the match would gbo to overtime.
In the third minute of the first overtime, the Mariners nearly won the game when Hamisi Amani-Dove's free kick found the head of a charging Washington, but his flick-on header was just wide left.
But five minutes later, the Kickers would complete the weekend sweep, when Tony Williams' cross into the box is headed towards net by a diving Rob Ukrop, and may or may hot have deflected off Greg Simmonds, who was between Ukrop and the net. But in any respect, the shot slipped into the Mariners net, giving the nearly home fans something to cheer about, and nearly securing the James River Cup to remain in Richmond for another season.
